Jo’s 1970 Jumper is an iconic design by Bella Freud. It is no longer available in pink but still comes in a range of bright colours. You may recognise Bella Freud’s knits from her recent collaboration with M&S, which we also love!
📕A Complicated Woman
We had the fabulous Self Esteem on the show this week talking about her new book, A Complicated Woman. This book marks the artist’s debut as an author. It is an assemblage of essays, iPhone notes, lyrics, and confessions that together form a deeply distinctive literary voice. It blends her northern humour, feminist clarity and emotional intelligence into something that sits between memoir, manifesto and art experiment.
Ever busy, Rebecca is also on stage next year. She is starring as the lead, Maggie Frisby, in the 50th anniversary revival of Teeth ‘n’ Smiles by David Hare — a role first played by Helen Mirren in 1975. They are only performing for 12 weeks, so make sure you book your tickets soon!
🧑🌾 In the Garden With… Katie Reynolds Design
This week the lovely Katie Reynolds, Interior and Garden designer from Scotland, sent us a fabulous tip for making the most of statement planters.
Katie: I always advise buying as big a planter as you can afford as it makes the most of a statement feature, but obviously that can be expensive, especially if they’re terracotta or zinc. Once you’ve made this big purchase, you want to make sure the display in your large planter is always looking really good.
So to ensure you have interest through the seasons, plant up different displays in large plastic pots that fit inside the big terracotta ones, and then these can be lifted in and out to change between the seasons.
It works particularly well for tulips as there’s not really much to see whilst they’re getting going, and then they also don’t look great when the leaves are dying back after flowering. With this tip, both those stages can be done out of sight and then they’re only on display in the big planters when they’re at their best. And then, once the tulips are over, you can swap in another pot for your summer display and so on through the seasons.

👩🍳 Dig the Design… Kitchen Colour
A few weeks ago we had a question about whether or not to add colour to your kitchen. Listener Paulette has got in touch to try to persuade us all to go for it and looking at her gorgeous space, we think we might have to! She says her vibrant kitchen cheers her up every day.
We also loved the wooden cabinets (Jo says they’re soon going to be all the rage) and Paulette’s high shelves that you can rest art on and swap around throughout the years.

💿 Crate Digging
Self Esteem: When I’m working really hard, I barely listen to music because I can’t bear to be inspired because I haven’t got any time to have any new ideas. But one thing I could listen to this year was Lady of a Certain Age by The Divine Comedy - it’s the greatest song of all time! So next year I’m really looking forward to listening to music again, and one album definitely on my list will be The Divine Comedy’s new record, Rainy Sunday Afternoon. I have already had a brief listen and I’m loving it, so I can’t wait to properly soak it in next year.
